Bio & Info - Edwin Roberto Guardia Alvarado

Education: Graduated from the University of Panama in 1993 with a Law Degree (LL.B., Licenciado en Derecho y Ciencias Políticas) and has a Masters Degree in Commercial Law from the Universidad Santa María La Antigua (LL.M., 1996). 

Member:  Colegio Nacional de Abogados (National College of Lawyers); and Panama Kiwanis Club. 

Languages: Fluent in Spanish, with an advanced level of English (spoken and written).

Professional Experience: Until recently, Edwin Guardia was the District Attorney of Panama, specialising in homicide cases, and prior to this he was the Specialised Prosecutor for Drug-related cases, with jurisdiction in all of the Republic of Panama.  Edwin has more than 20 years experience in the criminal field, having worked his way up from the position of clerk in the District Attorney's office, through Investigative Agent, Assistant District Attorney, and finally Specialised Prosecutor in Drug-related cases.

His experience includes jury trials, as well as closed court hearings.  Edwin has extensive knowledge of anit-money-laundering legislation, as well as all international agreements and information sharing treaties of which Panama is a member.  He also has experience in other specialised areas such as robbery and fraud, falsification of private and public documents, and crimes against life and liberty.  He was at one point the Supervisor of the Center for Receipt of Complaints, which is where all criminal complaints are placed, and was responsible for all centers in Panama. 

Areas of Practice: Criminal law:  battery, bribery & corruption, computer crimes, money laundering, controlled substances, credit card fraud, drugs & narcotics, embezzlement, fraud, murder, homicide and manslaughter, identity theft, perjury, rape & sex crimes, robbery, theft, and wire fraud, and white collar crimes; Commercial law: business law & contracts, shareholders rights, creditors' rights.
